Classic Rock for Classical Liberals: Land of Confusion by Genesis
What a brilliant music video! From their 1986 album Invisible Touch, ”Land of Confusion” paints a vivid portrait of corrupt political authority. Personally my favorite Genesis records are, by a long shot, Abacab (1981) and Duke (1980). I think it’s safe to say Brad will agree. But back to the topic at hand, here is a great lyrical moment from “Land of Confusion”
There’s too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can’t you see
This is a land of confusion. This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

I am unsure how you concluded that the above mentioned Genesis albums were ‘Classic Rock’, for starters. Having grown to adulthood in the late 60′s, our group of friends listened to a lot of Genesis but not those two albums. By the time Genesis recorded those albums they had lost much of their fire and also lost the brilliant lyricist, Peter Gabriel. Within a couple of albums after he left the group they became just another pop group. This change reduced the once socially-progressive, thought provokingly adept into the kind of tunes you could dance to. We weren’t much into dancing. Although they tried to be relevant we saw them more and more irrelevant.
Perhaps this is most clearly illustrated by the fact that our 7th grade daughter, who ONLY listened to pop music, started asking for Abacab. That sealed their fate in our very large collection of actual Classic Rock albums. We were accustomed to listening to lyrics that had substance accompanied with soaring instrumentals from truly talented musicians.
Although I can see your point in this posting, I feel it is a bit of a stretch in relevance to try to put a pop group in a Classic Rock position.
