Our Former Nemesis: The Romance of the Nation State

Propagandhi-Less_Talk,_More_Rock-CDAs an homage to the Center for a Stateless Society and Anarchist-Left BHLs everywhere, here is THE secular market anarchist punk rawk band of record (at least in my opinion), Propagandhi, performing the classic tune “…And We Thought Nation-States Were a Bad Idea” (commonly referred to as “Nation States”) from their second full length album Less Talk, More Rock (released by Fat Wreck Chords in 1996) live in Sydney, Australia in 2009.

Personally, I find their debut full length How To Clean Everything (released by Fat Wreck Chords in 1993) to be THE definitive punk album, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few scattered gems of radicalism on their subsequent records. “Nation States” is certainly one such.

I actually plan on blogging, in more detail, about Propagandhi’s first album and the impact it had on my personal philosophy and anti-authoritarian attitude. Music is a powerful tool, and being introduced to anarchist punk rock music in your early teens can have a lasting impression.

Anyways, please enjoy “Nation States”. Lyrics enclosed below the video:

“Publicly subsidized! Privately profitable!”
The anthem of the upper-tier, puppeteer untouchable.
Focus a moment, nod in approval,
Bury our heads back in the bar-codes of these neo-colonials.

Our former nemesis, the romance of the nation state,
Now plays fundraiser for a new brand of power-concentrate.
Try again, but now we’re confused; what is “class war”?
Is this class war? Yes, this is class war.

And I’m just a kid.
I can’t believe I gotta worry about this kind of shit.
What a stupid world.

And it’s beautiful,
No regard for principle.
What a stupid world.

Born, hired, disposed.
Where that job lands, everybody knows.
You can tell by the smile on the CEO,
Environmental restraints are about to go.

You can bet laws will be set
To ensure the benefit
Of unrestricted labour laws,
Kept in place by displaced government death squads.

They own us.
They own us.
Produce us.
Consume us.

Fuck this bullshit display of class-loyalties.
The media and “our” leaders wrap it all up in a flag, shit-rag, hooray.
